Practical Information

Information about visiting Aarhus, getting around, shopping, etc.

Getting around in Aarhus

In Aarhus we say that everything is within walking distance and when you arrive to the city it is obvious to see why. If you arrive at the train station it is only a few minutes’ walk before arriving at your hotel or conference venue. From here, within minutes, you have the opportunity to experience a vibrant city life with restaurants, shopping, museums and cultural experiences - just waiting for you to explore.

By walking:

The entire city is clean, compact and well-organised, which makes walking an excellent and enjoyable way to get around.

To walk from the centre of the city to the university takes approximately 30 minutes.

By taxi:

To book a taxi, please call this telephone number (+45) 8948 4848 or ask your hotel receptionist. There is also a taxi stand right outside the main exit of the train station and conveniently located taxi stands all over the city.

By bus:

Aarhus Sporveje, the municipal bus company, runs the yellow buses in the city. The bus route number is indicated at the front and the back of the bus and the destination is displayed at the front and above the rear door.

Please note that you cannot buy tickets on the bus or light rail. For more information on how to buy a ticket before travelling, please check your options here.

By Letbanen

Getting around in Aarhus is also easy with Denmark’s first light rail, Letbanen, operated by the company Midttrafik. Stops are located throughout Aarhus, making it easy to experience the city. The area around the Central Station and Dokk1 is the main junction point.

Please note that you cannot buy tickets on the bus or light rail. For more information on how to buy a ticket before travelling, please check your options here.

By cycling:

Denmark is an ideal country for cycling. There are not many (very) steep hills and there are many safe cycling paths. Urban conditions for cyclists are one of the best in the world and constantly being improved. Look out for the special cyclists’ routes (cykelruter) and cycle paths (cykelstier).

Wi-Fi

Aarhus University has three wireless networks which can be used all over AU. Guides for Eduroam, AU-Guest and AU-Gadget are available here.

Eduroam – Wireless network for employees and students

Eduroam is the primary wireless network for students and employees.

AU-Guest – wireless network for guests

How to set up AU-Guest:

1. Select the wireless network 'AU-Guest'.

2. Open an internet browser, for example Safari Firefox or Google Chrome. The login page for AU-Guest will now automatically be displayed. If the login page is not automatically displayed, try to write ‘au.dk’ in your browser.

3. Log on using one of the following options:

  • Facebook account
  • Google account
  • LinkedIn account
  • SMS
  • Microsoft account (for example outlook.dk)

NOTE! AU-Guest access is for the internet only. You will not have access to internal services such as files or printers.

AU's wireless network guest portal. Use one of the options marked above to log in.

Are you having trouble accessing AU-Guest?

1. Check whether Wi-Fi is switched off on your device (mobile, tablet or PC/Mac). If Wi-Fi is switched off, you must switch it on: You can do that under settings:

  • PC: Settings > Network and internet > Wi-Fi
  • Mac: System preferences > Network

2. Try to open another website than au.dk.

3. Have you clicked the AU logo to access AU-Guest? This does not work, because it links to the Eduroam installation program, and Eduroam is the wireless network for employees and students. Try to use one of the other login options instead.
